SUMMARY:Restoration Fridays - Make a Difference Week Edition
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 5th 2026\, the restoration team will be celebrating International Make a Difference Week by meeting at the Quadra Hill Nature Reserve for an educational day of forest restoration and ecological fuel management.\n \nGaliano Island has a legacy of industrial clear-cut logging that has resulted in huge swathes of simplified plantation forests on our landscape.  These young monocultures lack diversity and increase wildfire risk. On Quadra Hill\, we’ve been working for the past couple of years to model restorative forestry practices\, integrating both wetland restoration and forest restoration.\n\nOn Friday\, we’ll talk about the restoration we’ve done\, and then there will be opportunities to contribute by: \n\n\n\npulling down a Douglas-fir tree with a chain hoist\nmanaging fuels and creating conservation burn piles for biochar generation in the fall\n\nWe’ll meet at 9:30 at the cul-de-sac at the end of Melissa Road (1000 Melissa Road).  GCA staff will manage parking along the shoulder of Melissa Road\, or on the Quadra Hill property depending on vehicle type.  Snacks will be provided.  If you want to join us for lunch\, please bring a packed lunch\, and water for the day.\n\n\nTools will be provided.  Make sure you wear a pair of hiking boots with good traction\, as well as long sleeves and pants.  There is a chance of rain\, so come prepared.  FYI\, there are no washroom facilities on this property. \n\nWe hope you’ll be able to join us for a fun\, educational\, and productive day!  Please let Adam Huggins know ahead of time if you plan on attending\, by emailing him at restoration@galianoconservancy.ca

Join us at the MLC classroom at noon to chat with staff and board members and get a bit of fresh air in good company! \n \nWe are pleased to announce that this year’s featured speaker will be Dr. Jennifer Grenz  \nTalk title and description: \nRelational Restoration: Reclaiming Land\, Responsibility\, and Reciprocity\nConservation is often framed as protection and management\, creating conservation practices that may leave essential long-term human relationship out of land care. Drawing upon her Canadian National Bestselling book\, “Medicine Wheel for the Planet:  A Journey Toward Personal and Ecological Healing” and the principles of Indigenous Ecology\, Dr. Jennifer Grenz explores how land stewardship can move beyond preservation toward relational restoration—where ecological health\, cultural continuity\, and governance are understood as inseparable. Grounded in examples from her restoration practice and Indigenous-led land healing research in British Columbia\, she demonstrates how we can engage with deeper time\, recognize shifted baselines\, and support pathways that restore not only ecosystems\, but the relationships that sustain them. \nBio \nDr. Jennifer Grenz is an Assistant Professor and Indigenous Scholar (Nlaka’pamux\, member of the Lytton First Nation) in the Department of Forest Resources Management\, jointly appointed between the Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia. The research focuses of her Indigenous Ecology Lab (www.IndigenousEcology.com) are on the application of a food systems lens to restoration ecology\, and developing culturally centered\, data-driven restoration interventions using Indigenous and western sciences. The lab works entirely in service to the land-healing research needs of Indigenous communities\, particularly in the context of building climate resiliency and major climate event recovery. Prior to her academic appointment\, Dr. Grenz was the Executive Director of the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver and ran her own invasive plant management company\, Greener This Side\, managing invasive species for government agencies. Dr. Grenz is the author of National Bestseller\, “Medicine Wheel for the Planet: A Journey Toward Personal and Ecological Healing”\, a book based on her PhD dissertation published by Knopf Canada (imprint of Penguin Random House) and the University of Minnesota Press (USA). \n  \nAGM Agenda\n(Link to more detailed agenda will be added closer to the date) \n1:30PM – AGM Proceedings\n\nWelcome & Acknowledgement of Shared Territory\nCall to Order\nApproval of Agenda (Link) and 2025 AGM Minutes (Link)\nChair’s Statement\nFinancial Report (Link to 2025 financial statements)\nProgram Updates / Staff Reports\nBoard Elections\n\n2:45PM – Intermission\n3:00PM – FEATURED SPEAKER: Dr. Jennifer Grenz – Relational Restoration: Reclaiming Land\, Responsibility\, and Reciprocity
