SUMMARY:Indigenous Drumstick and Rattle-making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Following the powerful two-day drum-making workshop led by Sandy and Charity Morris\, where participants learned to craft their own ceremonial drum\, the Galiano Conservancy Association is honoured to invite the community to continue this journey of learning and cultural connection. \nOn Saturday\, March 7th at 1:00 PM\, join knowledge-holders Terry Wilson (Tsartlip) and Francine Spahan (W̱SÁNEĆ & Nlaka’pamux)\, for a hands-on workshop at the Millard Learning Centre\, where participants will craft traditional rattles and drumsticks using natural materials such as deer hide\, bone\, wood\, and pebbles. \nBoth instruments\, like the drum itself\, hold deep cultural meaning. Used in ceremony\, song\, and healing\, they carry the sound and spirit of connection to land and community. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be under the waves with our endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW)? We do and you can have an opportunity to step into the ocean with them during an open house being held on Galiano Island. \nThe Southern Gulf Islands Whale Sighting Network (SGISWN)\, sponsored by Saturna Island Marine and Education Society (SIMRES)\, is piloting CRITICAL DISTANCE throughout the islands using an immersive shared mixed reality (MR) experience that brings audiences into the world of the SRKWs. \nSeen through the eyes of Kiki\, an eight-year-old orca who carries the future of her pod on her shoulders\, participants experience how Kiki communicates with her family through echolocation and together face the daily perils threatening her famous family\, J Pod. \nPlease note there are age guidance restrictions\, as MR is not recommended for those 10 years and under. \nWhen & Where:\nGaliano Island\nYellowhouse Art Centre\nSep 22\, 2024 12-4 pm \n
