With a goodbye cheer, the chum salmon raised by the Galiano Community School were released into their new home at Grieg Creek.

Using the Salmon in the Classroom curriculum, the students starting by doing a stream survey: measuring the water temperature, flow rate and pH, as well as assessing the habitat.

After making sure the salmon were going to a healthy new home and the salmon were acclimatized to the creek’s water, each student got to let two salmon fry swim away.

As well, the students got to participate in a wetland study, looking at the bugs and creatures in Laughlin Lake. They found lots of cool critters including frogs, dragonfly nymphs, tadpoles, water tigers, a water scorpion and more!

It was a great day exploring the biodiversity Galiano Island has to offer.
