DEEP-Challenge #1: Sprouts

Sprout it out!

Challenge start April 6th & finish April 10th

Sprouting is the process of seeds germinating and creating shoots.  Established plants also sprout when they produce new leaves and buds as they grow.

Sprouts are a delicious and nutritious addition to our diet. Alfalfa sprouts, for example, are high in Vitamins A, B, C, E & K, and also contain Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Iron & Zinc. For anyone who does not like carrots, eat Alfalfa sprouts–they are very high in Carotene!

A variety of seeds can be used to create fresh edible sprouts:

  • bean and pea sprouts, e.g. lentil, garbanzo, soybean, mung bean, snow peas;
  • grain sprouts, e.g. brown rice, buckwheat, oats;
  • vegetable or leafy sprouts, e.g. radish, broccoli, beet, mustard, clover;
  • and other seeds, e.g. pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds.

Start with the DEEP Challenge & click here to follow directions on how to make sprouts!

After four to five days your sprouts will be ready to eat – please make a photo of them in the glass and send it to deep@galianoconservancy.ca (ask your parents to help you writing an email & attaching the photos). If you live on Galiano and usually visit the Galiano Community School, you can also send your photo to your teacher, and they will forward it to us! When submitting your photos, please let us know if you would like your DEEP Challenge photo published on social media and on our website (anonymously, unless you provide permission to include your name).

While growing your sprouts, make sure that you’re not also “sprouting” bacteria! Please click here to learn the basic rules of safely sprouting seeds!
