The Galiano Conservancy Bursary Fund

Helping Underserved Children and Youth

The Bursary Fund is used to help children and youth groups with travel and program fees who could not otherwise afford to come to Galiano Island. Bursaries are used by various school and youth groups.

Exceptional experiences in nature for those who need it the most.

Our education programs provide hands-on explorations of nature that are geared toward inspiring curiosity and fostering a relationship with the natural world. We believe these early experiences are fundamental in creating a new generation of ecologically conscious and caring stewards.

For many of the participants who benefit from bursaries natural areas and environmental education are out of reach. The purpose of the bursary fund it to make these places and experiences accessible. Some of the participants who benefit from our bursaries live in Vancouver or Victoria and yet have never been to the beach. For many it is their first time on a ferry and teachers report that the experience of leaving their urban center and exploring the intertidal zone or a coastal forest on Galiano is nothing short of transformative.

How it Works

Money in the Bursary Fund is only used to subsidize travel and program fee costs for groups in need.  Teachers and group leaders can apply to the fund and may receive:

  • Up to $700 in travel costs to cover on- island transportation.
  • 35% of program fees

The Bursary Fund is maintained through fundraising by the Galiano Conservancy and private donations. Every year at the end of August the GCA runs a fundraiser called the “Walk Along For Learning” in which volunteers raise pledges and walk a trail through the Galiano Mid Island Protected Area Network where they find musical performances scattered through the forest and end at a celebration at the Galiano Learning Center.
